Types of Thinning

The right thinning for the stand

Thinning isn't felling — it's removing the right stems to give the best trees room, light and value. We plan each thin around your woodland's age, species and objective.

01

Selective Thinning

Marking and removing poorer, damaged or crowded stems so the strongest trees keep growing in value.

02

Plantation Thinning

First and subsequent thinnings of conifer and mixed plantations — racks cut, cut-to-length, forwarded roadside.

03

Broadleaf Thinning

Sensitive thinning of native and amenity broadleaf woodland to improve structure and ground flora.

04

Crown Thinning

Reducing density within individual tree crowns on parkland and amenity trees for light and wind movement.

05

Windblow & Deadwood

Clearing fallen and hung-up stems after storms, and removing standing deadwood that threatens access or value.

06

Ride & Boundary Work

Re-opening overgrown rides, edges and boundaries as part of an ongoing management plan.

Why Thin?

Healthier woodland, better timber, more value

An unthinned stand competes with itself — stems go thin and spindly, light never reaches the floor, and the final crop is worth less. A well-timed thin concentrates growth on your best trees.

Thinning also generates an early return: removed stems become firewood, chip, pulp or sawlogs. On the right crop, the thinning can substantially offset — or even cover — its own cost.

Low-Impact Extraction

Minimal ground disturbance, by design

We extract with a forwarder rather than dragging, keep to cut racks, and choose low-ground-pressure machines and dry-ground timing to protect roots, soil and ground flora.

Removed timber is cut-to-length and stacked roadside ready for haulage or your own use — and where it has value, we'll offer to buy it. We work to FISA guidance and the UK Forestry Standard throughout.

Common Questions

Before you call

When is the best time to thin? +

It depends on species and ground conditions, but thinning is often done in drier months to protect soil, and on a cycle of every 5–10 years for plantations. We'll advise the right window for your stand.

Do I need a felling licence to thin? +

Usually yes, once you're removing more than 5m³ a quarter. Thinning is licensable felling. We check and manage the Forestry Commission application as part of the job.

Will thinning damage my woodland? +

Done properly it does the opposite. We extract on cut racks with low-impact machines to protect retained trees, roots and ground flora, working to FISA and UK Forestry Standard guidance.

Can the timber cover the cost? +

Often partly, sometimes fully. Removed stems have value as firewood, chip, pulp or sawlogs — where the crop is saleable we'll offset or buy it, and explain the figures at survey.

How much woodland do you need to make it worthwhile? +

Mechanised thinning suits roughly an acre upwards, but get in touch either way — for smaller amenity woodland we can thin with chainsaw teams.

Which areas do you cover? +

Surrey, Greater London, Kent, Sussex, Hampshire, Berkshire and the wider South East and Home Counties.
